Qihoo 360’s AK 47 to gun down competitors with retina display

If you think Apple is one of the few big name companies using retina displays in their products, you’re right—but a smaller-scale Chinese software company will feature the retina display in their upcoming “AK 47” smartphone also.

If you think Apple is one of the few big name companies using retina displays in their products, you’re right—but a smaller-scale Chinese software company will feature the retina display in their upcoming “AK 47” smartphone also.

Qihoo 360, mainly known for their antivirus and web browser software, will be producing a budget smartphone that sports some relatively good specs.  No, this is not an iPhone knock off, because it’s not called the “i”AK 47 smartphone (just AK 47).

Here are the specs according to the company’s weibo website:

Display: 4.5’’ 1280 x 720 retina display @ 326ppi
CPU: TI OMAP 4460 dual-core @ 1.2 GHz (Cortex-A9 architecture like the Exynos)
GPU: SGX 540
Memory: 1 GB RAM, 4 GB internal storage
Camera: 2.0 MP front-facing, 5 MP rear
OS: Android 4.0 ICS
Battery: 1800 mAh
Thickness: 9.5mm
MSRP: ~$274
Others: dedicated video processing hardware for HD contents

This is the first “budget retina Android smartphone” that I’ve heard of, there may be others but I have yet to come across it.  The official name of the phone is not known, and AK 47 is what Qihoo 360’s chairman, Zhou HongYi, calls it.  Can this budget AK 47 retina smartphone gun down competing devices?
