Network attached storage (NAS) firm QNAP has launched two new rackmount models in its Turbo NAS lineup, providing more budget-friendly options for small-to-medium businesses.

Both the TS-421U and TS-420U models feature a four-drive 1U form factor rackmount, 1GB DDR3 RAM, two Gigabit LAN ports and two USB 3.0 ports. The key difference is the processor speed, with the former coming with a 2.0 GHz Marvell 6282 CPU and the later including a 1.6GHz Marvell 6282 CPU.

The models offer cross-platform file sharing for Windows, Mac and Linux users, while the Windows AD and LDAP directory service provides IT administrators with simpler setup for a large number of users. Windows ACL lets admins set up sophisticated permission settings for shared folders, ensuring the right users have access to files.

As is vital for any storage medium, the TS-421U and TS-420U come with a variety of backup solutions, including Real-time Remote Replication, backups to cloud providers like Amazon S3, ElephantDrive or Symform, additional third-party backup software like Veeam Backup & Replication and Acronis True Image, and QNAP NetBack Replicator for Windows or Apple Time Machine for Mac.

Additional features include an FTP server for file sharing, a RADIUS server for centralising and consolidating user authentication, a Syslog server for collecting and storing logs, a VPN server for accessing the Turbo NAS and other resources on the same network from the internet, a proxy server for web filtering, monitoring and business security, and a web server for hosting websites on the Turbo NAS.

“The TS-421U and TS-420U satisfy the requirements of SMB and workgroup users who desire high performance networked storage with low acquisition cost but won’t compromise on reliability and features,” said Laurent Cheng, product manager of QNAP. “They deliver high performance coupled with a broad range of business-ready applications.”
