Quantenna just announced the first 4×4 (quad-stream) 802.11ac chipset. The QSR1000 will have a theoretical transfer speeds of up to 1.7Gbps and will purportedly be able to transmit faster, farther and able to serve more wireless devices than any other Wi-Fi solution currently available.

The QSR1000 is able to reach these new speed records by taking advantage of the new 4×4 MU-MIMO 802.11ac standard and therefore making it the first quad-stream Wi-Fi chipset available.
Currently all other Wi-Fi devices available on the market come with dual-stream, or three-stream setup at the most. By making use of a quad-stream, this new chipset can bring data speeds up to about 400Mbps faster than anything else out there.
CEO Sam Heidari said that the company is introducing this new technology because of the demand for more improved Wi-Fi performance. “By the end of this year, 802.11ac Wi-Fi will be widely deployed in smartphones and tablets driving the need for Wave 2 to enable the most efficient use of the available spectrum,” Heidari said. “In a real-world BYOD 802.11ac environment, Wave 2 Wi-Fi is not a convenience but a necessity.”

Quantenna says that the QSR100 chipset is sampling now, with reference designs available. According to them OEMS are already making use of the reference designs to develop access points, routers, and client consumer devices to be available later this year.
