Razer may have pulled off the unthinkable: an ambidextrous high-end gaming mouse that comes without wires…except for its charging cradle. The Razer Ourboros was announced, with availability slated for Q4, 2012. It is priced at US $129.99 (S$163).
The Ourboros, named after a mythical character of a snake/dragon that eats its own tail, may have been aptly named, for it lacks one (cord). It uses a high-performance wireless technology that claims wireless polling rates as low as 1 ms (comparable to wired USB). The mouse uses a light-weight lithium-ion battery, which can deliver up to 12 hours of continuous gaming, before needing a charge. This is unconventional, compared to cheap wireless mice that use AA or AAA size alkaline batteries, and can go for weeks, or even months, before needing a battery replacement. Razer includes a USB-powered cradle, on which you can simply place the mouse (as if it were a cordless telephone).
The Razer Ouroboros is an ambidextrous mouse designed for claw and palm grips using either hands, the thumb-rests are detachable, and the button layout is symmetric. It comes with a total of 11 HyperResponse buttons. It uses a dual-4G sensor system, with a tracking resolution of 8,200 DPI. Despite being wireless, it offers 1000 Hz polling with 1 ms response time. The sensors provide up to 200 inch/sec or 50 g acceleration.
Measuring 116 mm to 136 mm (length) x 71 mm (width) x 42 mm (height), the Razer Ouroboros weighs about 135 g. The mouse is backed by Razer's extensive button mapping software, which can store your profiles on the cloud, using Razer Synapse service.
“Designed for excellence and total ownage, the Razer Ouroboros was intended to be wielded by all serious gamers looking to win any FPS, RTS or RPG with custom-made dominance,” said Robert “RazerGuy” Krakoff, president of Razer USA. “We are proud to introduce it as Razer’s first gaming mouse that features optimized, customizable, ambidextrous ergonomics that better fit the curvature of any and every hand size and personal grip style by delivering ultimate comfort, control, power and built-in intelligence to ascend to gaming immortality.”
