Amazon has let slip the release date of 17 April for Blizzard's highly-anticipated hack-and-slash RPG Diablo III.

The date has since been removed from Amazon's website, suggesting it was not supposed to publish it at this stage.

Blizzard previously revealed that it was targeting a second quarter release date, which could be anything from the beginning of April to the end of June. Eager fans will be pleased to see that it is looking increasingly likely that the game will launch at the beginning of that period.

However, Blizzard has so far failed to confirm this release date and likely won't do so until closer to launch, in case any last minute game-breaking bugs force it to delay the launch. After 11 years in the works, however, it would be wise to not drag out the release much longer.

A recent comment from a Blizzard community manager caused considerable controversy when he told players to lower their expectations about the game. The game's director said that this was an “obviously sarcastic” comment and that gamers should have high expectations.

Blizzard also recently announced that it was axing 600 jobs, most of them relating to customer service. It promised it won't affect its games, but it will likely mean longer delays in sorting out purchases and in-game problems.
