Report: 28nm AMD GPU volume shipments in 2012
According to a report from Fudzilla, AMD will be able to supply next-gen 28nm GPUs in mass quantities only in 2012. At its last conference call, AMD confirmed that the next-gen GPUs will ship by the end of the year, although the actual general release still remains a matter of speculation.
According to a report from Fudzilla, AMD will be able to supply next-gen 28nm GPUs in mass quantities only in 2012. At its last conference call, AMD confirmed that the next-gen GPUs will ship by the end of the year, although the actual general release still remains a matter of speculation.
Since AMD will be shipping some GPUs within 2011, a launch for at least one 28nm GPU could be possible by the end of the year. However, availability will be very limited in 2011 and widespread availability for the same GPU will only happen in early 2012. As expected, the reasons cited have been challenges and yield issues with the long pending transition to 28nm at TSMC. AMD also plans to use Globalfoundries' 28nm process for selected chips, but GloFo's no better off than TSMC with the 28nm transition.
The report also suggests NVIDIA's performance Kepler GPUs are now scheduled for a Q2 2012 release, around the release of Ivy Bridge. By that time, AMD will have quite a few of their 28nm GPUs on the market.
