Research in Motion launches BlackBerry PlayBook in Singapore, first in Asia
The BlackBerry PlayBook has finally landed in Singapore. This evening, Research in Motion announced the launch of the long-awaited tablet device equipped with dual core processor and capable of multi-processing and multi-tasking. Expect to see the PlayBook in stores soon.
"The BlackBerry PlayBook is Research in Motion's (RIM) first tablet device that has a clean design, is easy to use and we believe its features and capabilities set the benchmark for the tablet space. It has the ability to truly multitask - supports multiple applications to all run at the same time. Today's event is the first PlayBook launch in Asia, and it will be available in Singapore, in stores, by the end of the month," said Gregory Wade, managing director of Research in Motion, Southeast Asia.
According to Wade, you will be able to pre-register for the PlayBook tomorrow and be available for pick-up within the month. The telco operators are also said to be showcasing the product and release the price plans for the PlayBook at the PC Show 2011, starting tomorrow at Suntec City Convention Centre.
The BlackBerry PlayBook sports a 7-inch high resolution display and it can connect and synchronize to the BlackBerry smartphone via wireless Bluetooth connection through the proprietary BlackBerry Bridge app. You need to install the BlackBerry Bridge app on the smartphone. Note that all BlackBerry smartphones running BlackBerry OS 6 are compatible with the PlayBook. One noteable feature is the tablet's multitask capabilities whereby it can playback a YouTube video, run a game and other applications simultaneously. According to a RIM executive, the tablet has been stressed tested with 1000 apps altogether, and it still manages to run everyone of them.
Available in 16GB and 32GB, we noticed at the bottom of the BlackBerry PlayBook holds the HDMI mini and microUSB connectors, while the power, playback/pauce, volume controls are at the top. Other features include 3-megapixel high-definition forward-facing camera and 5-megapixel high-definition rear-facing camera
Unfortunately, the BlackBerry PlayBook that is going to be available is a Wi-Fi only model. No word as to when the 3G model will be available though. There are also improvements to be added to the PlayBook which will come in over the air firmware update in time.
