Some Japanese researchers at University of Tokyo have developed a multi-core chip named GRAPE-DR processor that runs at 500MHz and performs at 512G FLOPS. This uni-processor contains 512 cores and acts as a math co-processor. The researchers aim is to build a supercompter which is fast, cheap and energy efficient too. The 512 cores are arranged in an array of 32×16 where each group contains 32 cores perform specific calculation. The die measures up to 289m2 and contains 300M transistors. It is manufactured by TSMC on 90nm process technology. The power consumption stood at 60W maximum and 30W at idle. The processor will be fitted onto a PCI-X card where each card will have 4 GRAPE-DR processors. A demonstration is done with the PCI-X card slotted into an 2-way Opteron system. I am sure this GRAPE-DR processor will somehow fit nicely into Intel Geneseo vs AMD Torrenza open architectures concepts. The goal of the research is to reach 2P FLOPS by 2008 with 4,000 GRAPE-DR processors and 512 general-purpose PC clusters and built with 45nm process technology. Their ambition is to rank top in TOP500 overtaking IBM BlueGene/P and Roadrunner.
