Review: LG SL90 LED TV

Compared to the conventional LCD TVs, LED TVs claim to offer higher colour saturation and contrast ratio to make your movie viewing experience better. We managed to get LG’s latest SL90 LED HDTV in for this review and see how breath-taking it really is.

Most households today would have either a Plasma or an LCD TV (and maybe more than one too), and the latter has become more popular choice between the two. Just a few years ago, LCD TVs were built with LED backlight, though recently, manufacturers have came up with a “new” breed of TVs known as LED TVs.

In general, LED displays uses light-emitting diodes and are more commonly used for billboards, mega-sized screens in stadiums, destination signs on public transport vehicles etc. However, that term has become a widely used marketing gimmick for manufacturers.

The LED TVs you see at electronic stores are referring to LCD TVs. The LED part is built at the edge (or edge-lit LED) as opposed to the previous ones with LED as the backlight. LED-lit LCD TVs, regardless of whether it is edge or backlit is really a LCD TV which uses LED instead of CCFL for enhanced lighting.

(And this is different from OLED TVs which does not require backlight and has higher contrast ratio.)

The SL90 is the latest model in LG’s line of LED High Definition TV (HDTV) which features an stylish edge-to-edge glass panel that looks to turn heads. Our review unit is a 42-inch LED edge-lit TVs that boasts a contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1 and 500 nits brightness.
