Roadmaps show Intel prepping two new Xeon lineups

Documents appropriated by HKEPC last month suggest Intel will ditch its “desktop CPU on server” strategy and introduce a new Xeon lineup for single-processor servers. The Chinese site has found additional evidence to bolster this report in the form of a roadmap for single-processor Xeon 3000-series processors. The roadmap says the following chips are due out in September:

According to HKEPC, Xeon 3000 processors will pop into LGA775 sockets on boards with new Intel 3000/3010 chipsets, which are code-named Mukilteo 2/P. These chipsets will also be compatible with Pentium Extreme Edition, Pentium D, Pentium 4, and Celeron processors, but not the Core 2 Duo, HKEPC’s previous documents state. Despite this incompatibility, Xeon 3040-3070 chips appear to sport identical specifications and near-identical pricing to Core 2 Duo E6300-E6700 processors.

An additional Intel roadmap shows a Xeon 7100 lineup scheduled for August 27. The roadmap suggests upcoming Xeon 7100 chips are based on none other than Intel’s Tulsa core, which is outfitted with 16 MB of shared L3 cache and has a die the size of a small country. Unlike Woodcrest and Conroe, Tulsa chips are still based on the Netburst architecture; HKEPC says they’ll be clocked between 2.5 and 3.4GHz with a 667-800MHz front-side bus, and cost between $ 856 and $ 3,157.
