Rumour: AMD preparing Phenom II X4 980 BE

Reported by on Saturday, March 19 2011 2:39 am

Just as we thought the Phenom II X4 975 BE was the last hurrah for the Phenom II X4 series, AMD is rumoured to be preparing yet another top Phenom II X4 part - the 980 BE. As suggested by the nomenclature, the 980 BE is another minor speed bump, to 3.7 GHz. It retains the same 125W TDP and is expected to release sometime between April to August.

With all the anticipation focussed towards AMD's next-gen FX and A series processors, releasing in June/July, it is commendable that AMD has been eking out these minor speed bumps at regular frequencies. The close proximity to the next-gen releases also suggest the 980 BE will release closer to April than to August. Pricing is an unknown, but is likely to end up under $200.

Surely, the 980 BE will be the final Phenom II X4 product. However, given AMD's track record, we are not entirely read to dismiss a future 985 BE!
