Following the promising release of the Geforce GTX 460, the rumour mill
has been working overtime, boosted by HIS confirming ATI’s Southern
Islands is coming soon. We have known about Southern Islands for more than a quarter now,
but details have been hard to come by since then. Fudzilla now reports
that ATI’s Southern Islands, expected to be branded as Radeon HD 6000,
will release in October, about one year after the HD 5000 release.

As we know, Southern Islands is an intermediate generation of sorts, between Evergreen and Northern Islands. This has occurred due to the cancellation of TSMC’s 32nm and delay of 28nm. Hence, S. Islands remains at 40nm, and is expected to by a hybrid between Evergreen and N. Islands.

The two codenames being rumoured are “Turks” and “Caicos”, which would replace Redwood (HD 5600/5500) and Cedar (HD 5400), respectively. A product codenamed “Cayman” will be a direct replacement for Cypress and the Radeon HD 5800 series. We can also expect a dual-GPU enthusiast product based on this chip. Interestingly, there is no mention of a Juniper / HD 5700 replacement, which is a rather popular product. Perhaps it could be a return to the HD 4000 three-chip structure, with a shrink following later.

AMD GPG have been very quiet for a long time now, and there’s still a lack of information. However, the general rumours suggest a Q4 2010 release, in which case we can expect more information to leak soon.
