[Rumour] GF104 is Fermi 2

GF104 has long been rumoured to be a cut down derivative of GF100. Basically, much like Juniper is to Cypress. 8 SMs or 256 SP were rumoured for the top end GF104 part, which would take on the HD 5700 series. However, Fudzilla is reporting that GF104 is not a straight GF100 derivative, but a new architecture. Furthermore, Nvidia are targeting a release as early as Computex – or first week of June.

Basically, much like Juniper is to Cypress. 8 SMs or 256 SP were
rumoured for the top end GF104 part, which would take on the HD 5700
series. However, Fudzilla is reporting that GF104 is not a straight
GF100 derivative, but a new architecture. Furthermore, Nvidia are
targeting a release as early as Computex – or first week of June.

If indeed GF104 is much more than just a cut down GF100, Nvidia may have a huge surprise up their sleeves. An entry level GF108 derivative is also in the works, which is also rumoured to be part of the same architecture. Of course, we don’t expect a major new architecture, but rather Fermi with all the problematic bits removed. We can hope that a GF102 chip will be in the making, which could be basically what GF100 was supposed to be.

Nvidia’s commitment to keeping release dates and promises has been rather hopeless in the recent past, so we will take this rumour with a big bag of salt. However, let us hope this is indeed true, as it could be the right step towards recovery. In the meantime, GTX 400 cards remain largely unavailable, or available at exorbitant prices.
