Rumour: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 460 1GB / GTX 470 price cut repealed on November 14th

Just a few hours prior to AMD's big Radeon HD 6800 series release, NVIDIA announced an aggressive counter-attack in the form of hefty price cuts to the GTX 460 1 GB and GTX 470. The rumour mill strongly questioned the feasibility of offering an enthusiast level 530mm2 GF100-based GTX 470 for $260, while rumours of the price cuts being temporary circulated around the web. This was further supported by Tom's Hardware's release day report suggesting the cards's "sale is only going to last three weeks". Fudzilla is now reporting a similar story, with the GTX 460 1 GB and GTX 470 set to rise in prices once again in mid November.

Just a few hours prior to AMD's big Radeon HD 6800 series release, NVIDIA announced an aggressive counter-attack in the form of hefty price cuts to the GTX 460 1 GB and GTX 470. Fudzilla is now reporting a similar story, with the GTX 460 1 GB and GTX
470 set to rise in prices once again in mid November.
Further confusion is created with a large variety of non-reference Overclocked GTX 460 cards with a differing range of clock speeds and thermal characteristics, which NVIDIA are pushing as the primary competition for the Radeon HD 6870. While the reference GTX 460 1 GB is no match for the HD 6870, some of the massively overclocked cards provide stellar value in the $210-$230 range. Particularly, the EVGA GTX 460 FTW provides an incredible 25% overclock which boosts its performance to the HD 6870 / GTX 470 performance class at bargain price of $229. While it does consume significantly more power than the HD 6870, it does provide stellar price/performance and arguably effectively counter-attacks the HD 6870 release. Unfortunately for NVIDIA, these cards make for better deals than both the reference GTX 460 1 GB and the GTX 470 as well.
If all GTX 460/470 cards - including non-reference designs - move back closer to their previous prices, they will clearly lose to a HD 6800 series card, unless you are looking for one of the exclusive features such as CUDA or PhysX. Added to that, with no signs of supply shortages for the HD 6800 series, it seems the new Radeon cards have achieved market stability. NVIDIA is also rumoured to be preparing a GTX 560 card as well, based on GF112, which would be the proper answer to the HD 6800 series. Keeping all this in mind, let us hope the prices stay stable or it is just going to make things even more confusing for everyone.
