Samsung has just introduced a gargantuan smartphone being called the Galaxy Mega.  This model comes in a 5.8 or 6.3” display and is a direct response to consumers demanding larger and sharper looking displays, but is this just a passing fad?

This latest phablet from Samsung is in direct response to consumers demanding higher resolution displays, and it appears to be a growing trend in smartphone design.

Consumers have come a long way since buying up Apple's original iPhone with its 3.5” display.  Now smartphones have become so large that they picked up the name ‘phablet’ due to their likeness to a mini tablet.  In fact, the next step up from Samsung is a mini-tablet, the Galaxy Tab, which comes with a 7” display.

This consumer change stems from the fact that so many people are using their smartphones for everything on the Internet nowadays.  In fact mobile devices have put a real hurt on the PC market, and some manufactures have ceased making desktops for that very reason alone.

The Interactive Advertising Bureau (IAB) presented some very interesting changes with consumer habits not too long ago. The report titled, “The IAB Mobile Phone Video Diaries”, shows that nearly two-thirds of smartphone video was being watched in people’s own homes. Also, 90% of those who watched video on their mobile devices shared those videos with others, which in turn has spurred a market for larger displays.  Oddly enough, almost 40% of those videos watched on a mobile device happened in a room with a TV or desktop PC nearby. 

“Digital video marketing has skyrocketed over the past year, and is primed to deliver even greater returns on a variety of screens – particularly on mobile phones,” said Anna Bager who serves as General Manger of Mobile Marketing for IAB. “With the Digital Content NewFronts set for the spring, we’ll certainly see the depth and breadth of original video content that marketers can leverage to reach digital audiences.”

A recent Business Insider report also shows that in 2012 approximately 41 million people watched video daily on their smartphones, which was a 22% jump from the previous year.  

Another reason for the demand in larger displays is the fact that so many carriers in the U.S. now offer 4G LTE wireless Internet.  By offering relatively inexpensive data plans, smartphones and tablets have become the main means by which people are surfing the Internet and watching videos on-line. The real question is will this trend continue or is it just a passing fad as some have suggested.
