Samsung has become the global leader in the mobile phone market, knocking Nokia out of its prior first place position, which it held for the last 14 years.

The Korean electronics giant already dominates the TV and flat screen market, but with Nokia losing ground in the smartphone race, it is no surprise that Samsung has managed to take its crown.

Samsung shipped 93.5 million mobile phones in the first quarter of this year, compared to 82.7 million by Nokia, which rose to fame for its feature phones in almost every sector of the market. Failure to keep up with the success of the iPhone and Android smartphones, however, has seen the company make significant losses, with even a deal with Microsoft for Windows Phone 7 devices doing little to help.

Apple is in third place with 35.1 million units shipped, giving both rival companies a significant lead. If Nokia continues to lose money and Apple continues to soar, however, we could see Nokia drop into third place in the coming years.

Thanks to widespread success in many of its businesses, Samsung reported a rise in quarterly profit of a whopping 81 percent, bringing in 5.05 trillion won ($4.5 billion), its highest quarterly profit since 2008.

The company said it “cautiously” expects its momentum to continue, a view echoed by many analysts.
