SanDisk launches affordable consumer SSD series

SanDisk has finally entered the consumer SSD market after having made a wide range of OEM solutions for the past couple of years in various form factors. Its new Ultra branded range of SSDs are unlikely to break any speed records, but then again, they're not likely to break the bank either.

What we're looking at is a "last gen" drive with SATA 3Gbps interface and a maximum sequential read speed of 280MB/s and a write speed of 270MB/s. This is hardly earth shattering performance figures any more, but it should still be good enough for plenty of notebooks out there, especially compared to hard drive performance.

SanDisk offers a three year warranty on the Ultra series SSDs and claim that the 60GB model can handle at least 40TB of data written to it over its lifespan, with the 120GB model capable of handling 80TB and the 240GB model 120TB. What isn't clear is what the actual life span of the Ultra SSDs is rated at, but we'd presume it's longer than the warranty period.

The MSRP is US$129.99 for the 60GB model, US$219.99 for the 120GB model and US$449.99 for the 240GB model, but SanDisk itself is listing the 120GB model for US$215 and the 240GB model for US$450, but a quick searched revealed that the 120GB model is available for as little as US$179.99 online which makes it one of the cheapest 120GB SSDs out there.
