Toshiba expects its joint venture with Canon, SED, to start producing surface-conduction electron-emitter display (SED) TVs this August and the products will begin hitting the market next March, according to Kazunori Fukuma, managing director of Display Devices & Components Control Center of Toshiba.

SED will initially market 36-inch SED TVs, according to the Chinese-language Economic Daily News. However, SED will focus on the 50-inch segment, Fukuma indicated.

SED TV will first be marketed in Japan, with the Europe and the US following later, Fukuma said.

SED has high contrast ratio and low power consumption; therefore, it is most suitable for the over 40-inch FPD (flat-panel display) TV market, he added.
