Sonic the Hedgehog has raced onto the Android platform for the first time, thanks to the efforts of developer and publisher SEGA.

The game is a port of the original Sonic title from the SEGA Genesis days, with several new features, including the ability to unlock Tails and Knuckles as playable characters. The base game is already available on iOS, but the expanded gameplay is now available as a free update.

Additional features include widescreen support, the addition of zoom at 60fps, a remastered original soundtrack, new leaderboards and achievements, and the new Time Attack mode.

The game follows the same tale as the original, with Dr. Eggman attempting to turn all the animals of Mobius into mechanical monsters, prompting Sonic to save the day. Nothing that collecting a few thousand gold rings won't solve.

Sonic the Hedgehog goes on sale in the Google Play store for $2.99 (US or Australian), £1.99, or €2.69.
