Sharp Plans E-bookstore Service In December With "GALAPAGOS" E-Book Reader

Sharp Japan has announced that it will launch "GALAPAGOS" eBookstore service in December this year. On top of that, the company will also introduce two tablet devices - 5.5-inch and 10.8-inch - under the "GALAPAGOS" name.

Sharp is set to launch their new cloud-based media service business, named "GALAPAGOS", to provide a new user experience to meet customer’s needs with a network service and device. The service is only for the Japanese market though. An ebookstore service is planned to begin in December this year and two tablet products have been introduced under the "GALAPAGOS" name.

The new ebookstore claims to provide an "Automatic Scheduled Delivery Service" (fee-based service) for periodical publications. The most recent editions of newspapers and magazines a user has subscribed to can be delivered and read on the ebook readers. Free trial versions of recommended ebook content can also be delivered to the ebook reader and users can choose to the purchase full content immediately.

The manufacturer has introduced two ebook readers - a 5.5-inch LCD screen (1024x600), and a 10.8-inch high-resolution HD LCD display (1366x800) that allows users to enjoy magazines across a two-page spread. Both are equpped with 802.11b/g Wi-Fi connectivity.

According to Sharp, approximately 30,000 newspapers, magazines, and books will be available at time of launch of the "GALAPAGOS" ebookstore service in December and more content will be added.
