Gearbox takes us to the moon for some old-fashioned shoot-and-loot chaos this Fall.
The moon is hardly something you would associate with Borderlands, but come October, gamers will be doing their fair share of shooting and looting on its cratered surface.
Today Gearbox has announced that Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel will release on October 14, 2014 for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
This new standalone adventure chronicles Handsome Jack’s transformation into the devious villain featured in Borderlands 2 whilst on the Hyperion Moonbase. Players can choose between four different classes–Athena the Gladiator, a rogue assassin; Wilhelm the cybernetic Enforcer; Nisha the Lawbringer, a sheriff from Lynchwood; and Claptrap.
You read that right. We can play as Claptrap.
Borderlands: The Pre-Sequel has a wealth of new guns like laser-based weaponry–we are on the moon, after all–and freeze guns that can slow baddies down in order to deliver a killing blow. In their lunar excursion players will be able to take advantage of the moon’s low-gravity by leaping higher and can even use jetpacks to double-jump for strategic evasion (or just plain fun).
The newly released gameplay trailer (see below) showcases frenetic firefights in action while also showing off some dynamic skill trees and moon monsters in the process. It also features a nicely choreographed moon-dance sequence courtesy of Harmonix.

Pre-ordering the game nets you the Shock Drop Slaughter Pit, a challenging survival add-on that pits players against increasingly difficult moon monsters in a zero-atmosphere arena.
