Features

Ample space for CPU cooling (78mm in height)

In reality, 78mm isn't that much headroom, but it is enough to save you the trouble of hunting for low-profile heatsinks - the stock heatsinks Intel and AMD bundle with their boxed processors work just fine.

Elevated standoff for motherboard back side components

In order to squeeze as many features into the mini-ITX form factor as possible, some manufacturers have resorted to mounting components on the rear of the motherboard, something we don't normally see on full-sized ATX boards.

Such components may be mini-PCI slots or simply electrical components such as inductor coils. To ensure that these do not come into contact with the motherboard tray and possibly create a short circuit, the SG05 uses taller motherboard standoffs than usual.

120mm fan in mini casing for positive pressure cooling

Silverstone relies on a 120mm intake fan in the front to create airflow in the casing. Apart from a 80mm fan in the power supply, there is no active exhaust. Silverstone claims that this setup creates positive pressure inside the case, ensuring that air flows outwards via the side and top vents. While we are slightly skeptical of this claim because of the low RPM and low airflow of the 120mm fan, we'll see how well this setup works out in practice later on.

Support 2.5” and 3.5” hard drives

The SG05 has room for one 2.5" and one 3.5" hard drive. For the target audience of the SG05 - those who want a balance of portability and performance - two hard drives should be sufficient. The SG05 is by no means intended for use as a file server - There are other mini-ITX casings designed for such purposes.

The inclusion of a 2.5" bay goes hand in hand with the decreasing cost and increasing popularity of solid state drives. Using a 2.5" solid state drive for applications and a larger capacity conventional 3.5" drive for data storage would probably be the best use of the SG05's capabilities, and that was exactly what we used in our test setup.

Mini-DTX / Mini-ITX motherboard

As you should know by now the SG05 works only with mini-ITX and mini-DTX size motherboards. The two are nearly identical, the sole difference being that mini-DTX has one more expansion slot than mini-ITX.

SFX PSU compatible, 80 Plus certified SFX 300W power supply included

It is possible to swap out the bundled 300W SFX power supply for another one, but there's really not much point since the highest wattage SFX units we've seen are 350W-  and those are too long to fit into the SG05.

The bundled SFX power supply is 100mm deep - Any longer and you'll run into the support bracket. Even if you do decide to dispense with this bracket (it is easily removable) the location of the hard drive cage, as the photo below illustrates, makes it impossible to use a larger power supply unit.


Purchasing a power supply separately is also going to cost more in total, which coupled with the size restrictions makes it a good idea to simply use the bundled one. The bundled unit is manufactured by FSP, and has a total combined output of 300W. The all-important 12V output is divided into two rails whose combined maximum output is 22A.

Silverstone's website lists the Nvidia GeForce 9800GT and the ATI Radeon HD4850 512MB as the most powerful graphics cards that can be supported.

We can't vouch for the veracity of the listed specifications, but if those are indeed accurate then it looks as if a HD4870 512MB or GTS 250 512MB can be squeezed in. Hence we'll be using the former for our temperature stress testing. Hopefully we won't be treated to a fireworks extravaganza.

Support for standard-length expansion cards (max. 9 inches)

The SG05 has room for full-height expansion cards with a maximum length of 9 inches (~23 centimeters). What this means is that you can pop many standard graphics cards, except for the high-end models, into the SG05 without issue. is no longer limited by what can be squeezed onto a low-profile PCB or one of limited length.
