The wait has finally ended with local distributor Achieva Technologies bringing in Western Digital’s latest Caviar SE16 640GB hard disk.

It’s a pretty odd capacity, but this is due to Western Digital’s 320GB-per-platter drive technology. Western Digital has already been putting out single platter 320GB drives for a few months already.

Running on lesser platters is always a welcomed move as less heat and noise is produced. Not only that, sustained transfer rates of the drive are increased as each platter is of a higher density.

This drive is really selling fast at Bell Systems and Cybermind Computer House. You might not be able to get stocks this weekend though. The 640GB drive comes with a 5-year 1-to-1 warranty and goes for $ 150-odd, which works out to just 24 cents per gigabyte.
