The Christmas message from the monarch is a tradition dating back to 1932, when King George V gave a speech at 3pm UK time. The tradition will continue this year, but the technology has taken a big leap forward.

Sky was the producer for the Queen's speech in 2011, but this year it is hoping to wow viewers by showing the event in 3D on its Sky 3D channel. BBC HD will also show it.

Sky has been pushing for adoption of 3D TV in the UK, showing sporting events and documentaries by Sir David Attenborough, as well as Avatar, the film that renewed interest in the technology.

While the Queen's speech is unlikely to have anything flying at the screen like the recently-released The Hobbit, it does make for an interesting end to the monarch's Diamond Jubilee year.
