Smartphones and tablet computers are to get USB 3.0 by the end of this year or early next year, according to the the USB standards organisation at CES 2012.

Rahman Ismail, CTO of the USB Implementers Forum, revealed that the superfast USB speeds should be available in a MicroUSB port size for mobile devices within roughly a year's time.

Data speeds are expected to be around 800Mb/s. To put this into context, Ismail said that a file that takes 15 minutes to send via USB 2.0 will take just over one minute with USB 3.0.

These speeds fall significantly short of USB 3.0 on PCs, however, which can manage up to 5Gb/s, but this is a limitation of portable devices, which need more power to achieve higher transfer speeds.

Data transfer is a huge boon, but mobile devices will also benefit in terms of battery recharging if they're powered by USB, as the energy will transmit at an equally faster pace. This will be particularly beneficial considering how power-hungry many modern devices are.

The mobile USB 3.0 will also be backwards compatible with USB 2.0.
