Qualcomm could be working on a faster variant of the Snapdragon 800 chipset, with a clock speed of 2.5GHz.

Qualcomm snapdragon 800 A Snapdragon 800 chip clocked at 2.5GHz could power devices in the near future

The recently discovered successor to the Snapdragon 800 will most likely be the next premium mobile chipset that powers the next major flagship devices from big name manufacturers, but it seems Qualcomm is looking at giving the S800 a speed boost in the meantime. According to the head of Chinese OEM Gionee, there will be a 2.5GHz variant of the S800 next year – with model number MSM8974AC – in addition to the standard 2.2 and 2.3Ghz variants.

Since this faster Snapdragon 800 will simply have an increase in clock speed instead of a newer architecture, performance probably won’t see a noticeable jump. But then again, even though the current Snapdragon 800 chips offer more power than we need on our smartphones, we’ll gladly take all the increase in performance we can get, while we wait for Qualcomm to dazzle us with the Snapdragon 1000 or whatever the next generation of Snapdragon chips is named.
