It's possible that we'll be seeing a range of Vita OS running smartphones and tablets in the future to come. At least that's the hint given by Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai during a Q&A last Friday.

It's possible that we'll be seeing a range of Vita OS running smartphones and tablets in the future to come. At least that's the hint given by Sony CEO Kazuo Hirai during a Q&A last Friday.

It was said during the talk that while the Vita OS has debuted in a gaming device, it is actually a mobile OS with significant room for expandability. SCE's Senior Vice President Yoshio Matsumoto also chimed in when the relative questions were put forth by saying, "If you're asking if we've made it in a way that's expandable, so that it's possible to apply to smartphones and tablets on top of achieving the high responsiveness we need for gaming devices–it is possible. That doesn't mean that we're applying it to smartphones and tablets at this point in time, but it's been designed with expandability in mind".

When considering what Vita OS provides as is on the PlayStation Vita it's not hard to see it being incorporated into a smartphone or tablet. It's already equipped with a range of useful apps such as Twitter, Facebook, Netflix and Skype etc. then there's all the mobile functions included like web browsing, 3G connectivity, location-based social networking and camera functions etc.

Nonetheless, it's difficult to predict just how long it would take to bring the software across to the smartphone and tablet world in a way that it would be instantly competitive against the two super well established dominants, iOS and Android.
