The so-called Sony “Sirius”, expected to debut at next month’s Mobile World Congress as some sort of Xperia Z1 rehash, has apparently been caught on camera over the week-end, while its rumored specs look positively… pedestrian.

By 2014 high-end standards, that is, and also compared with what the Z1 brought to the table last fall. As a matter of fact, if all the fresh speculation proves legit, the D6503 can hardly qualify for a Z1 Plus moniker, let alone a Z2.

Then again, the big guy’s official branding is still very much up in the air, as is its future availability. Maybe it’s not supposed to go on sale globally and will instead get a limited Asia run. Or maybe it’s headed Verizon’s way, as @evleaks suggested a while back, and America’s number one carrier insisted for a less than stellar list of features to help keep pricing low.

In any case, the Sirius is tipped to highly resemble the Xperia Z1, pack 3 GB RAM instead of 2, ever so slightly raise the screen size ante (from 5 to 5.2 inches), and swap the standard quad-core Snapdragon 800 MSM8974 SoC for a marginally punchier MSM8974-AB unit.

Add skinnier bezels, an overhauled UI, pre-loaded Android 4.4 KitKat, 1,920 x 1,080 pixels resolution, a 20.7 MP main snapper and 2.1 MP secondary camera in the mix, and you get a solid enough high-ender to fend off the Galaxy S4, Note 3 or LG G2. The Galaxy S5 or G3? Probably not, which is why we sure hope there’s a legitimate Z1 sequel in the pipeline too.

One with Quad HD res (overkill, sure, but great marketing gimmick), Snapdragon 805 CPU, 3,500+ mAh battery and maybe even 4 GB RAM. Oh, I know, how about making this D6503 Xperia ZL’s follow-up and also roll out a Z2 with the above dreamy spec sheet at MWC in February?
