If you're looking for an affordable Android phone with a high-resolution display and decent performance, then Sony Ericsson's new Xperia neo V might be what you've been waiting for. In addition to the new handset, Sony Ericsson also announced that it'll be updating its Xperia range of smartphones to Android 2.3.4 come October.

Sony Ericsson didn't specify which Xperia handsets will receive the 2.3.4 update, just that it'll be available in selected markets starting in October and that it'll be a phased roll out. Beyond the small additions in functionality that Android 2.3.4 adds, Sony Ericsson is combining the update with an improved version of its Facebook inside Xperia and adding a 3D sweep panorama feature. Phones with a front facing camera will also get support for Google Talk with Video Chat.

As for the Xperia neo V, well, it's a slightly feature light version of the Xperia neo and keeps the same overall body design but gains a white colour option in lieu of the red one offered for the Xperia neo. Sony Ericsson hasn't cut too much in terms of features as the Xperia neo V still sports a 1GHz Qualcomm MSM8255 SoC, 512MB of RAM, 320MB of user accessible memory and a 3.7-inch 854×480 screen.

In fact, the only difference that we've managed to find is the camera, which has been changed to a 5 Megapixel unit over an 8 Megapixel model in the Xperia neo. The Xperia neo V will also be Sony Ericsson's first handset to ship with Android 2.3.4 as its default OS, but as the other models are getting updated, this isn't exactly a key selling point either. In fact, we can't quite figure out why Sony Ericsson launched the Xperia neo V, as it's so similar to the Xperia neo that it's hard telling the two apart. No word on pricing yet, but we'd expect the Xperia neo V to come in at less than Xperia neo when it arrives sometime in Q4.
