Sony is continuing to sell the PlayStation 4 in more and more countries while Microsoft’s Xbox One is still only available in 13 regions.
Sony announced that its PlayStation 4 console has crossed 6 million sales globally since its launch last November. Sales numbers of the consoles were surely bolstered by its launch in Sony’s home market last month. Meanwhile, Microsoft’s Xbox One is said to have sold 3.5 million units globally.
One reason as to why Sony’s console is selling more than Microsoft’s is the fact that it is available in more regions. The PS4 is available in 57 markets, while the Xbox One is still available in only 13 countries around the globe. Also, the Xbox One is $100 more than the PS4 in the U.S., which has led to many gamers choosing Sony’s offering.
Another reason might come down to the exclusive game selection. While the Xbox One boasted better titles initially, a host of exclusive games are set to debut on the PS4 this month. These include long-delayed title Driveclub, inFAMOUS Second Son and The Order 1886.
In addition to hardware sales, the PS4 has managed to accrue over 13.7 million software sales. Titles like Killzone: Shadow Fall, Call of Duty: Ghosts, FIFA 14, Battlefield 4, and Assassin’s Creed IV: Black Flag contributed to most of the revenue in this segment. Sony’s Knack PS4 hardware bundle also led to the game being listed as one of the best-sellers. Sony has also announced that half of all PS4 users have signed on for the PlayStation Plus service. Gamers are also sharing more using the PS4, with over 100 million shares recorded using the DualShock 4 controller and 3.5 million videos broadcast to Twitch and Ustream.
Things might look different once the Xbox One becomes available in more regions, but until that time, Sony will remain the leader in the next-gen console wars.
