Sony halts sale of Xperia Tablet S over defect

Sony has halted the sale of its Xperia Tablet S only a month after launch after finding a major defect that makes the device vulnerable to water damage.

Sony has halted the sale of its Xperia Tablet S only a month after launch after finding a major defect that makes the device vulnerable to water damage.

The tablet is advertised as “waterproof,” but the Japanese electronics giant found gaps between the screen and the case, which would allow water inside and damage the tablet's components.

A spokesperson for the company, Noriko Shoji, said that the flaw was made at a manufacturing plant in China.

For the 100,000 people throughout the world who have already bought an Xperia Tablet S, Sony will offer fixes for free. There was no talk of refunds, but presumably the firm would have to allow them since the product is defective.

Sony said it does not expect the repair costs to have a significant impact on its earnings, and it added that it does not know when sales of the device will resume.

In the mean time, don't try a “splash test” like the one in this video.
