Sony has just announced a price increase for the PlayStation 4 console and select games and accessories in Canada.
Sony Canada has effectively raised the price tag for the PlayStation 4 console by $50 CAD in an effort to adjust to the current “market environment”. Select first-party games and accessories for the next-gen console have also been hiked as much as $10.
“The PlayStation 4 computer entertainment system delivers phenomenal play experiences that will shape the world of games for years to come and has quickly become the next gen console of choice with gamers in Canada.
“To respond to changes in the market environment, the price of PlayStation 4 will be revised from CAD $399.99 to $449.99 MSRP.”
This decision is quite a logical move for the company, seeing as the previous $399 CAD price tag offered marginal savings for Canadian consumers. Before now, Canadian gamers were able to purchase a PS4 at the $399 CAD price, which translates to $359 USD, which adds up to a savings of $40 USD.
The PS4’s amended cost of $449 CAD puts an end to these savings while recouping profits for Sony, and the additional increase for games and peripherals does the same. The PS Camera and DualShock 4 controller have both been adjusted to $64.99 CAD, whereas games such as Infamous: Second Son are now $69.99 USD.
The news is assuredly disappointing for our Northern neighbors, however it’s not really a surprising nor unfair move for the gaming giant. It’ll be interesting to see if this price adjustment affects the overall demand for the PlayStation 4 and its peripherals/games, especially since early buyers got a better deal.
