If you thought that the announcement of the Playstation 4 would result in a cheaper Playstation 3 for you to nab, you may be out of luck for the time being.
When Sony announced the PS4, the low $399 price took just about everyone by surprise considering the generational leap the hardware represents over the current generation. That did lead to questioning whether or not that means the PS3 would receive a price cut to reflect the rift between the two. Apparently this won’t be the case.
A Sony exec was quoted as saying “The PlayStation 3 is a system where it hasn’t been particularly easy to get the costs down.” This is interesting considering they said the PS4 was designed around the ability to aggressively lower the cost of the device over time which shows that they have learned from past mistakes. He didn’t completely shut the door though. “We continue to look at opportunities, there may or may not be any more, I genuinely can’t answer to that”.
One interesting take on this is that by keeping the PS3 price point not too far away from the PS4, the PS4 would seem like a lot more value in the eyes of the consumer, which is definitely a reasonable strategy. Or there is the possibility that they still plan on dropping the price by the holidays and don’t want to admit it just yet. Until then, stay tuned.
