According to The Wall Street Journal, Sony has inked a deal with Viacom and will feature its channels in a new online TV service that might launch along with its next-gen console, the PlayStation 4.
The new internet-based paid TV service is set to launch later this year, in which Sony will stream cable channels as well as on-demand content. The service will initially be available on as of yet announced PlayStation console and Bravia HDTVs. Sony is looking to sign deals with at least two other content providers before the service goes live.
The Viacom deal means that users subscribed to Sony’s online TV service will get to view TV shows the same time as customers on Comcast, DirecTV or Verizon FIOS. Currently, all Viacom channels, which include MTV, Comedy Central, BET, Logo, VH1 and Spike will be available.
At this year’s E3 conference, Sony Pictures Entertainment Michael Lynton announced that the entertainment division was hard at work bringing its content to the PlayStation console. Sony’s Music Unlimited and Video Unlimited services are already scheduled to be ready for a Q4 launch. Also, Sony has renewed its trademark for PlayStation TV on June 26th, which might be an indication as to what the service will be called.
Until now, Xbox was the console to go to for entertainment needs,but if Sony actually manages to strike deals wit content producers and get an on-demand TV service out by the time the PS4 launches, then that will surely give Microsoft something to worry about.
