Sony isn’t about to stand idly by while Samsung steals the headlines with a no doubt mind-blowing Galaxy S5, and the Xperia line looks set for a top-notch refresh at next month’s Mobile World Congress.

sony sirius Sony Sirius to go official as Xperia Z2 at MWC, Quad HD 5.2 inch screen in tow

Codenamed “Sirius” as per the covert information unearthed by leak master @evleaks, Xperia Z1’s sequel may land with a simple and fitting market name: Xperia Z2. As some of you probably remember, the alleged Z2 made the rumor rounds not long ago under a different alias, Avatar, touting top-shelf specs now “confirmed” by a very reliable source close to Android SAS.

The online publication’s track record suggests we should take their word with caution, however @evleaks seems to corroborate the intel. Or at least that’s my interpretation of the serial leaker’s retweet of the story. In any case, as long as nothing’s official, I suggest you keep the salt shaker nearby.

To recap, the Sony Xperia Z2 is expected at MWC in late February with a quad-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 (not 805) SoC, 5.2-inch 2,560 x 1,440 pixels resolution (Quad HD, QHD or 2K) display, 3 GB RAM, 20.7 MP rear-facing camera and, get this, 3,700 mAh battery.

Needless to say that’s quite the step-up compared with the Z1, though the main snapper and CPU are bound to pretty much stay the same. One question still in need of vital answers is if Sony also has a design makeover in mind, since the jumbo screen and monster battery may add a bit of unnecessary bulk to an otherwise sensational ensemble.

Other near guaranteed features include water and dust protection, a Mobile Bravia Engine 3 with improved X-Reality, as well as pre-loaded Android 4.4 KitKat. Sounds positively dreamy, at least until the Snapdragon 805 onslaught kicks off.
