newps3 Sony to launch smaller and lighter PlayStation 3

Sony has announced a smaller, slimmer and lighter PlayStation 3 model, as well as a budget model, as gamers prepare for the impending release of Nintendo's latest console.

The new PlayStation 3 will feature 500GB of storage and a sleeker design, up to 25 percent smaller than current models, which will appeal to the space conscious or those who need their console to not clash with their home decor. It will launch on 28 September and sell for €299.99.

For those with less cash, Sony is preparing a 12GB model. Since this is not a lot of space by today's standards, users will be able to connect an official 250GB hard disk drive to expand storage. Those who want to use an unofficial HDD can do so, but they have to buy an official mounting bracket, so either way Sony will pocket something. This version will launch on 12 October.

The "budget" model will cost €229.99, which is not much cheaper than the 500GB version. The BBC reports that HMV in the UK will charge £185 for the 12GB model, which is only £15 cheaper than what it charges for the 160GB version, which may make potential customers think twice about how reasonable the “budget” model is.

Sony will also be launching a revamped PlayStation Store in October, with a new user interface that makes it easier to find and download content.
