Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin made a tweet that could only lead to one obvious conclusion, that Sony is working on an updated Xperia Z with the SNapdragon 800 SoC inside and is planning to release it soon, perhaps in one of the upcoming events.

When Russian blogger Murtazin tweeted that he’s holding a Sony Xperia Z with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 800 SoC inside, we immediately ran to our sources to confirm, fact or fad. Turns out, a mystery device that Sony was working on apart from Xperia ZU Togari and Xperia i1 Honami is the updated Xperia Z flagship, and it may have more than just an updated chipset.

Our sources and Murtazin both mention the use of a new display, so there’s a big chance that the updated Xperia Z won’t be marred down with the poor viewing angles that everyone complains about. Another tweet revealed that the prototype Xperia Z packed a SLCD3 display, much like the HTC One, but the final model would end up with an inferior display (please let this be false).

With two Sony events lined up for the 25th of June and 11th of July, a number of new devices are rumored to be revealed. The list currently includes a Sony SmartWatch, the Xperia ZU Togari phablet and the newest addition, an updated Xperia Z. I don’t know about you, but an updated SoC (we all know just how fast the new S800 SoC is) and improved display together with Android 4.2.2 (and a new UI) would put the Xperia Z back at the top of the current 2013 flagships for me.

UPDATE:

Just wanted to clarify, Honami is a different handset and is in no way related to the Xperia Z refresh. Honami is a camera centric phone designed from the ground up with one sole purpose, to blow away every other Smartphone ever made to oblivion.
