Do you happen to own either of Sony's Reader Pocket Edition or Reader Touch Edition e-Reader devices? If you do, you would probably be very familiar with the fact that those devices are known for being compatible only with XMDF copy-protected e-Books, although things are about to change for the better by as early as today. This is due to the fact that Sony has just announced the release of a new update which will see the aforementioned devices now being able to accept titles that have been packaged in the .book format.

According to Sony, the decision to enable .book support on its e-Readers was made due to the format's capability to support layouts that are widely used in magazines and Japanese coomics. The company claims that the inclusion of .book as a supported format for its e-Readers will allow it to further expand its content lineup, thus ensuring that consumers will have a greater variety of publications to choose from for use in its e-Readers.

In addition, Sony has also announced that it intends to start selling titles and manga encoded in the .book format in its Reader Store from June 23 onwards, which happens to be today. Oh, and just so you know, this service is only available in Japan. Oh well…
