Sony Xperia Honami could be marketed as Z1 or Z One

Just like it has happened in the past with the Xperia Z and Z Ultra, the Sony Xperia “Honami” is unable to maintain the slightest air of mystery ahead of its formal introduction, being an open book for us all already.

Aside from knowing it’s being prepped for a September 4 grand unveiling, the Honami has had large chunks of its spec sheet revealed numerous times in the past few weeks and has even graciously smiled for the camera in white and purple coating.

But there was still one piece of the puzzle left unraveled. “Was” being the key word there, as a well-known and reputable XDA developer might have put this into place also just a few hours ago.

According to “DooMLoRD” (cool nickname, by the way), the Xperia Honami, which some sources told us might be called Xperia i1, will after all be marketed as the Z1 or Z One. Interestingly, the tipster doesn’t say Xperia Z1 or Xperia Z One, so, even though it’s a long shot, one could assume Sony is looking to ditch the Xperia branding for its high-end devices, similar to what LG has done with the G2.

Now, I have to say I never bought the rumor about the Honami being called i1. As for Z1, it clearly makes much more sense, but I’m afraid it could be a little confusing. There’s an Xperia Z out and about, plus a ZL, ZR and Z Ultra, so another phone with “Z” in its moniker would not sound so awfully special.

And that’s exactly the point. If all the rumors are to be trusted, this “Honami” fellow will really be a one-of-a-kind device. 5-inch Full HD screen, 2.2 GHz quad-core Snapdragon 800 CPU, 20.7 MP rear camera, 3,000 mAh battery, those are all features that spell premium mobile technology, in which case it would be a terrible shame for people to overlook it simply because it has a run-of-the-mill name.

Bottom line, I hope Sony can get more creative than that and come up with a spectacular pseudonym for a groundbreaking smartphone. Don’t you?
