A team of speed-runners known as “quadrazoid” has set a new world record for speed-running a playthrough of Half-Life in 20 minutes, 41 seconds.

Headcrabs Speed runners beat Half Life in just twenty minutes

Half-Life is a game that has spawned a new era of PC gaming, giving life to something greater than just a single video game release. When it hit the market, the sci-fi FPS action blew our minds and it instantly became a hit, and still has an affect on the gaming community today.

Just about every gamer can recount those fond memories in battling pesky leaping headcrabs, or navigating the twisted, distorted landscape of Xen–and the sinister G-Man, who always straightened his tie and walked off with that mysterious briefcase.

Ah, the memories.

A team of collective speed-runners known as “quadrazoid” has taken us back to Valve’s glory days with a ultra-speedy playthrough that Sonic would be jealous of. While the footage itself is more likely to give you motion sickness rather than pique your nostalgia, it represents the culmination of more than four years of speed-running across the group, and ultimately the breaking of the game’s previous speed record of 29 minutes 41 seconds.

The speed-run was enacted by different members of the seven-man team, with each runner handling different parts of the play through. It’s also worth noting that quadrazoid spent considerable time practicing as well as finding new ways to manipulate the game’s physics (as is readily apparent throughout the footage), and also finding the most precise paths to shave off milliseconds off of their time.

The team had the following to say about their record-breaking accomplishment:

“Not only do we owe this new world-record time to all the new tricks we’ve discovered, the new routes we’ve found and the new ways we’ve learned to manipulate the game.

“A lot of the improvement from the first estimation and the previous world record (29 minutes, 41 seconds) comes from the very hard work and countless hours put into perfecting each and every segment, no matter how short or trivial.

“This run has truly been an endurance test for everyone involved, and we’re extremely happy to finally be able to share it with you.”

Congratulations are due to the speed-runners of quadrazoid–quadrazid, Crash Fort, coolkid, pineapple, YaLTeR, Spider-Waffle and FELip–who have set a new speed-run world record for Half-Life at 21 minutes and 41 seconds, which is incredible to most of us who took a slow and steady pace through the game’s fantastic campaign.
