“The armed forces of Niflheim launch a devastating assault upon the Kingdom of Lucis, casting Crown Prince Noctis and his comrades out of their homes and into the fray. The engaging tale to follow draws audiences into an awe-inspiring world steeped in the rich storytelling traditions of SQUARE ENIX’s renowned First Production Development team.” –Official Final Fantasy XV description
Square Enix has recently revealed character details for their upcoming real-time RPG Final Fantasy XV, shedding light on the title’s main protagonist as well as his kith and kin.
Interestingly enough, each of the characters’ names are imbued with Latin-heavy nametags, and although Square Enix is trying something new with the title’s action-based gameplay, each of the bios hint at a dynamic story arc that is quite befitting of a Final Fantasy release.
Below you can information and bios for a few of Final Fantasy XV’s main characters:
Noctis Lucis Caelum a.k.a. “Noct”
“Prince of the Lucis Kingdom, possessing eyes which can sense the death of others. His close friends call him Noct.”
The Crown Prince of Lucis kingdom, Noct has the rare ability to forsee a person’s death and is imbued with a preternatural ability to see the “light” of the very crystals that his realm defends. Noct’s family has been known to operate akin to that of a crime syndicate; regardless, Noct wields a wide array of weapons in battle and utilizes a surprising variety of uncanny abilities–most of which are displayed via the trailer below.
“A friend who has been a bad influence to Noctis since his school days. While he can get carried away easily, there’s another side of him which is driven to help friends in need.”
Prompto is an interesting character; a fugitive from a foreign land, Prompto opts to make use of firearms rather than traditional swordplay, adding a nice bit of stylish flair to Noct’s team–guns are also illegal in Lucis, but Prompto isn’t one to play by the rules. A wanted man, Prompto often has a whimsical side and is quite playful with Noct, despite the fact that there’s a bounty on his head.
“The eldest son of a household tasked with protecting the royal family from generation to generation. A close friend of Noctis who is closer to him than a true brother.”
Gladiolus is a childhood friend to Noct and Ignis, and acts as the royal shield that wards Noct’s family. The two have a strong kinship with one another and are more like brothers than friends, and have formed an inseparable bond that culminated with their shared years of early childhood.
In battle, Gladiolus uses hand-to-hand attacks and can also summon a massive two-handed sword–the very same seen in the trailer below.
“A childhood friend of Noctis who grew up receiving gifted education befitting a staff officer. He understands Noctis well and is his confidant.”
A childhood friend to both Noct and Gladiolus, Ignis is the royal family’s strategist and heads up the tactical planning department. Ignis has a calm demeanor and often keeps his composure even in the heart of battle, contrasting Prompto’s whimsy and Gladiolus’ primal fury.
In battle, Ignis wields an elegant katana to slice and dice his enemies with multiple-strike attacks, and is also fairly useful in assisting his teammates with throwing knives.
“Head of Royal Family Guards, and one of the three strongest fighters in Lucis. While he is harsh to Noctis and the others, he is a true man of honor who takes his vows to king and country very seriously.”
Cor Leonis (Latin for “heart of the lion”) is one of the three best fighters in the realm of Lucis, earning him the namesake the “Immortal Shogun”. Cor is strict and stoic, rigidly assigned to his duty and ardent in his honorbound cause to defend King Regis and the Lucis kingdom.
While Cor takes his services very seriously, he has a soft spot for his friends, and watches over them. He cares in his own way, even if stone can sometimes be softer than his steely heart.
From Left to Right: Prompto Argentum, Gladiolus Amicitia, Noct Lucis Caelum (main protagonist), Ignis Stupeo Scientia and Cor Leonis.
So there you have it–all of the major characters of Final Fantasy XV, each with their own personalities, quirks, and distinct combat styles that all manifest into one deadly force to be reckoned with.
It will be interesting to see how each of these characters come together to bring an unforgettable experience across next-gen consoles. Square Enix is well-known for their established flair for character dynamism, and from the looks of these companions, Final Fantasy XV will be yet another gem in the company’s already ample RPG crown.
Additionally it’s worth mentioning that this is the first numbered title in the Final Fantasy series that has scrapped the turn-based combat system and opted instead for real-time action, and in the trailer below you can see some of the enthralling battle sequences that remind this gamer of fantasy-infused Devil May Cry–with a whole smattering of polish and additional gameplay features.
Final Fantasy XV has been announced for Xbox One and PlayStation 4, and no official release date has been set. We’ll keep you updated when more information comes to light, and be sure to scan the game’s official website for more info.
