Several BioWare developers who worked on its recently launched Star Wars: The Old Republic (SWTOR) MMORPG have left the company to work on an independent game that fuses strategy with role-playing.

Arnie Jorgensen, Alex Thomas and John Watson spent the past five years working on BioWare's first online game, which has met with positive reviews, but now they want to do a little something different.

“It sounds like a cliche, but we're making the kind of games we'd like to play,” the trio said. “We appreciate good art, thoughtful design and engaging story and think there are plenty gamers out there who agree.”

The developers set up their own independent game studio called Stoic, where they are operating from a goat shack in a very low budget attempt to make and release a game.

Their first game will be The Banner Saga, a cross between an RPG and turn-based strategy game focusing on the Vikings. Art, story and strategy are the three cornerstones of the game.

The game will be released soon and will be free to some extent. It's not clear if there will be in-game purchases, ad revenue, or donations for keeping the studio in existence, but the game sounds like it could be a very enjoyable experience.
