Square Enix has allegedly ordered stores to destroy copies of Final Fantasy XIV in preparation for the release of a revamped version of the game.

A retailer on the NeoGaf forum posted a message saying: “My Square Enix rep this morning emailed me the following. All retailers are to destroy remaining inventory of Final Fantasy XIV today.”

This was accompanied by a screenshot of an email stating that the game has been discontinued and that there is a “field destroy credit of $16.00” per game.

The MMORPG will soon receive a reboot as A Realm Reborn, which may explain the reason for Square Enix wanting to withdraw store copies of the current game, but the company has not confirmed this..

The new game will feature a complete redesign of regions, a new graphics engine, a new server system, a revamped user interface, significant changes to the battle system, classes and jobs, and more community content. However, the changes will also mean that some old content will be removed, including guild marks and some achievements.

The destruction of current game copies will mean that fewer new people will be coming to the game, but it also suggests that the release of Final Fantasy XIV 2.0 is drawing nearer.
