This Synology DS207+ NAS server may look a little small but it is big on features for small businesses and corporate users. Features include: Advanced Data Protection, Windows ADS Authentication and even a Web Server.

Exterior and Interior

The DS207+ is compact and finished in a glossy white plastic shell with a slight indented front design with a contrasting black front panel. On the front, are USB2.0 ports, eSATA ports, power and USB copy buttons. Status LEDs and activity lights are also present for Status, LAN, Disk 1 and Disk 2. The USB and eSATA ports are for connecting external USB and eSATA hard drives, USB printers and other USB devices.

Two USB2.0 ports, a Gigabit LAN connector, 60mm cooling fan and a reset button are found at the rear of the DS207+. Cooling fans usually generate a bit of noise but the Synology operates unobtrusively.

Our evaluation unit did not come with hard drives installed. You will need to purchase and install them separately. For this review, we used two 500GB Seagate Barracuda SATA-II hard disks. The installation is extremely easy: Remove two screws, Slide open the chassis, mount the drives in the bays, connect the SATA cable and power cable and close chassis.

Next, just plug in the LAN cable, power cord and press the power button.
