Apple’s iPad Air has been mocked by both Nokia and Microsoft recently with comparative ads and now Amazon joins the chain-yanking campaign with a commercial of its own pitting the iOS-based 9.7-incher against the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9.
Nokia has made a habit of advertising its products at the expense of the competition and the latest Lumia 2520 commercial follows the tradition, pitting the 10-inch tab/mini-laptop hybrid against the less productive Apple iPad Air.
Four-time Ballon d’Or-winning footballer Lionel Messi is the protagonist of a new and exciting Samsung commercial, being named captain of the Galaxy 11 team that will take on aliens in a deciding game for the fate of Planet Earth.
Celebrity endorsement might have not helped HTC’s dwindling financials too much (mostly because the Taiwanese only made one commercial starring Robert Downey Jr.), but that’s not stopping Samsung from adding LeBron James to its already impressive partner roster.
We all knew this was coming. And not a moment too soon, it has. The ink is barely dry on Apple’s press releases announcing the new iPad Air and iPad mini 2 and Cupertino’s rivals have already come out swinging to defend their own tablet bids.

Ever since Samsung has decided to quit mocking Apple in its Galaxy commercials, things have gone from weird to weirder to weirdest. Remember the dancing ninjas/goat-centric Icelandic ad for the Galaxy S4 (though technically Sammy did mock Apple if you paid close attention)?
Albert Einstein once said the difference between genius and stupidity is genius has its limits. And while I don’t want to offend anyone, the latest Internet hoax originating from 4chan (where else?) proves that stupendously.
It’s not a secret anymore that top-notch hardware and solid software support are not the only things that sell gadgets nowadays, with marketing and publicity playing a key role in convincing people to buy or pass a certain product.
Nokia might not look like a real threat for Samsung when it comes to minor things like, oh I don’t know, actual smartphone sales, but as far as advertising goes, the Finns look in much better, and perhaps more creative, shape than the Koreans of late.
You know, I’ve never been one to encourage commercials that promote a product by going at the competition’s throat. But if you can do it in style, with grace, humor and taste, I say go for it.
According to Microsoft and their sometimes fun, sometimes deceptive commercials, the Asus VivoTab Smart, Dell XPS 10, Surface RT and Acer Iconia W3 are all faster, cheaper and/or better at multitasking than Apple’s iPad and iPad Mini.
It’s the same old story with just a slightly tweaked script. Windows-based tablets are better than Apple’s iPads, despite what sales numbers say, and the best Microsoft can come up with to prove that is through deceitful commercials that only tell one side of the story.
Given how bad Windows 8-powered tablets are doing sales-wise and how little of an impact they’ve made in a market dominated by Apple, you’d think Microsoft would have more important things to do than try to give the (false) impression their slates are better than the iPads.
It’s definitely not unusual to see Samsung yanking Apple’s chain (or the other way around) on primetime TV, but when it involves dancing ninjas and a goat… you have to assume something went wrong.
