With initial demand for Microsoft’s second-gen Surface tablets looking underwhelming (even by Surface standards) and increasing competition, including from the inside, it’s probably only a matter of time until the Surface 2 and Surface Pro 2 will get discounted.
It’s no longer a matter of speculation, Microsoft is alone in the Windows RT tablet business and will be for time to come. But as hard as it might be to believe, the first-gen Surface RT and Surface 2 will get company sooner or later.

Following what can be kindly described as a middling first wave of Windows 8 and RT-based tablets, most tech-savvy folks probably expected Microsoft and its partners to dial it up a notch come the fall of 2013. Or at least be a little wary about their prospects in a very competitive world.
When it rains, it pours. It was only 24 hours ago that we spotted the second-gen Microsoft Surface RT tab (likely to be called simply Surface 2) doing its benchmarking rounds with a Tegra 4 CPU inside, and we already have some scoop on its imminent Windows 8.1-powered counterpart.
Seeing as Microsoft’s first-gen Surface tabs have been colossal sales duds (especially the one running Win RT) and Nokia, which is close to becoming Redmond’s property, is prepping a far superior slate with FHD screen and Snapdragon 800 CPU, you’d think the wisest call at this point would be the halting of the Surface project.
According to Microsoft and their sometimes fun, sometimes deceptive commercials, the Asus VivoTab Smart, Dell XPS 10, Surface RT and Acer Iconia W3 are all faster, cheaper and/or better at multitasking than Apple’s iPad and iPad Mini.
It’s been a long time coming and at last it’s happening. Microsoft is ready to savagely slash Surface RT prices, bringing the tablet closer to its real value. Staples will likely be the first to put the discounts into effect, but chances are other retailers will follow suit soon enough.
Given how bad Windows 8-powered tablets are doing sales-wise and how little of an impact they’ve made in a market dominated by Apple, you’d think Microsoft would have more important things to do than try to give the (false) impression their slates are better than the iPads.
A special Microsoft Surface Pro flavor is slated for a June 7 Japanese launch with 256 GB of on-board storage. The slate is priced at roughly $1,000 and comes with pre-loaded Office 2013.
