Thermalright Venomous X Review: The Return of the King?

Reported by on Friday, February 5 2010 6:30 pm

Being second isn't a familiar position for cooling powerhouse Thermalright. They are back with their latest heatsink, the Venomous X. Would this be the return of the king? Or would Prolimatech continue to hold the cooling performance crown it managed to wrench from Thermalright?

What can we say? Honestly speaking, we weren't very sure if Thermalright would be able to claim the performance crown back from its competitor when we first received the package. However, once put through its paces, the Venomous X blew us off our feet. It's impressive, and sets a new record for air cooling.

In our tests, the Venomous X was able to shave off about 5 degrees on load than its competition, and that's no easy feat - it's nearly unimaginable by us. It seems to respond well to changes in airflow, and you should get quite a linear performance increase as you scale the fan speed up. That said, the Venomous X would be suited for a variety of applications ranging from silent computing, right up to howling high-speed air record breakers.

We're very happy with the new mounting system. It is easy to install, distributes the pressure well, and doesn't torture your motherboard by warping it. The inclusion of two sets of fan clips and two sets of rubber strips is great for those looking to set-up a silent push-pull fan configuration. The adjustable pressure setting would come in handy for those who want an even tighter seating atop the processor IHS, although we find that we didn't need to make further adjustments.

Heatsink specifications as follows:
- Dimensions - 127mm x 63mm x 160mm (W X D X H)
- Weight - 755g (excluding bracket and fan)
- Heatpipes - 6 x 6mm nickel-plated sintered heatpipes soldered to base
- Base - C1100 pure nickel-plated ultra-shine Cu base

All in all, we feel that the Venomous X has everything you would need out of a performance cooler package. Compact design, check. Accessories, check. Mounting system, check. The Ultra-120 Extreme was legendary, and now the Venomous X takes its place as the next legendary cooler. If you have the cash to spare, ignore the rest and buy the best.

With that, we would like to award the Thermalright Venomous X with our Editor's Choice!

The TRUE Rev. C is now priced at approximately US$60, while the Venomous X is priced at US$65. Don't forget that no fan is included in the package, so you would need to factor that into your cost.

(Hey Thermalright, mind making a Venomous X Black Edition for us?)
