THQ and Relic Entertainment have announced Company of Heroes 2, the sequel to the popular real-time strategy game, which will see players face off in the harsh winters of Russia.

The first instalment of the game, released in 2006, focused on the Western Front of World War II, but Company of Heroes 2 will give players the opportunity to experience the epic battles on the Eastern Front, where the Red Army will be tasked with pushing back the Nazi invaders.

The game uses Relic Entertainment's Essence 3.0 Engine, which adds some new technological advancements to the game, including dynamic battle tactics, improved graphical fidelity and additional environmental destruction, not to mention a slew of new Commander abilities.

“Company of Heroes 2 is a true successor, introducing a new front, new protagonists and new technology while retaining the unique mix of strategic gameplay and competitive multiplayer that made the original Company of Heroes such a success,” said Greg Wilson, Producer at Relic Entertainment.

The developer plans to release a slew of downloadable content after launch to enhance the game's life-cyle, but it is not yet clear what this content will involve.

Company of Heroes 2 is currently slated for release in early 2013 for PC.
