The time-hopping Playstation 2 games could be returning on Sony’s latest console in an updated, multiplayer-centric form.

The Timesplitters franchise may not be the most memorable among first person shooters in the PS2 era, but it still has its fair share of rabid fans. When Crytek bought the troubled TimeSplitters developer Free Radical, it seemed to mark the end of any further games in the series. Earlier this year, Crytek endeared itself to many when it allowed a development team of fans and former Free Radical employees to rehash the classic Timesplitters games using Cryengine 3. Dubbed Timesplitters : Rewind, the game was given the green light back in March this year, and was in development for the PC only.

Now, it seems that PC gamers may not be the only ones who will get to relive the crazy multiplayer action Timesplitters is known for. Michael Hubicka, the project lead for the game, has revealed that a PS4 version might be on the cards. However, the comeback is dependent on the continued good mood of Crytek, since Rewind on the PS4 will only see the light of day once the parent company approves it.

Hubicka said, “We’re actually going to go ahead and start development [of Timesplitters Rewind] on PlayStation 4. Just because we’re pretty confident Crytek’s going to say go ahead and do it. But we don’t want them saying go ahead and do it when we’re caught with our pants down and we’re like halfway through development and [then] start something for the PlayStation 4.”
