It looks like Toshiba has a liking for the colour red that the X300 is finished in. The lid has flames, the interior has red accents that highlight the quadraphonic speakers and even when you boot up into Windows you get the same themed desktop background. I think the liking to red is because it is one of their corporate colours and it is just plain HOT – full of fire and ready to roast the opposition.
Measuring 412mm x 306mm x 62.5mm, the X300 is extremely heavy, weighing even more than the Singapore Army’s SAR-21 assault rifle at 4.3kg. You don’t want to lug it around unless you need to do some weight training. To alleviate the strain of lugging the unit in a shoulder bag, Toshiba includes a special purpose built backpack for carrying the load of the X300.
The Toshiba features a 17-inch WSXGA+ display that supports a native resolution of 1680×1050, which is a resolution you would normally find on a 22-inch desktop monitor. Since the screen size is smaller with the same resolution, you will find the display of text and graphics razor sharp, albeit a little small. The screen resolution is not Full-HD but playback at 720p will still provide excellent movie watching.
Below the screen is a full size keyboard with number pad, touch pad with buttons and fingerprint sensor, and four Harmon Kardon integrated speakers at each corner. (The subwoofer is at the base for those who may wonder where it is for a 4.1 speaker system). The keyboard has a glossy black finish that attracts fingerprints and feels slightly plasticky to use. But aesthetically, it complements the overall design. There is also a wireless switch and DVD Super Multidrive at the front.
A 1.31-megapixel web cam is placed above the display for you to record video or take pictures (of up to 1280×1024 pixels). You can use it for video chatting or video conferences using a communication application such as Windows Live Messenger. The Camera Assistant Software can also help you to add various video effects to your video or photograph.
On the left hand side of the X300 is a USB port, a unique eSATA and USB combo connector and an ExpressCard/54 slot.
The right hand side you find a volume control, headphones / S/PDIF line out, microphone line in, two USB2.0, modem jack and a media card reader. The card reader supports SD/SDHC, miniSD/microSD, Memory Stick (PRO/PRO Duo), xD-picture, memory stick Duo and MMC cards.
At the rear of the X300 you will find an i.LINK (IEEE1394), HDMI out, Displayport, VGA and LAN port. Take a close look at the large power port situated beside the i.LINK.
The X300 also comes with integrated 802.11a/b/g/n and Bluetooth wireless connectivity for you to connect to wireless networks, hotspots and other devices easily.
